In 1972, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert Taft, Jr., and Sam Beard founded the Jefferson Awards for Public Service with the idea of creating a Nobel Prize for public service.
The Jefferson Awards are given annually to volunteers in the United States
who provide extraordinary public service. Here's a link (currently in beta) that showcases some of the Jefferson Awards recipients and their stories - http://sharingservicestories.org
